Used clubs are clubs generally sold for use although some may be collectable, especially putters and wedges. Item IDs of most collectable items start with the letter 'C' in the item tables.  Whether clubs are classified as used, unusual or collectable is a judgement call of the buyer. Many used clubs are classic designs originally sold through golf pro shops but that is not always the case. Since the 1980's all pro quality clubs have been available through retail distribution. A number of older averaged priced clubs sold through department stores or sporting goods shops have designs and quality equal to higher priced clubs and should not be dismissed lightly as being of lesser quality e.g. Northwestern and Palmer brands. If you have ever used a stainless Sportsman sandwedge or a set of Louisville Slugger irons you know that these are great designs even though they were inexpensive when new. Also remember that many major club manufacturers have sold second tier dealer clubs which have a look and feel comparable to their top of the line models.

Used Clubs are sold as-is or with Upgrade options.

As-Is Condition

The as-is description in the spec sheet will indicate any noticable flaws or wear in the club(s) aside from usual wear. Some examples of noticable flaws are a major ding on an iron head, rust on steel shafts or significant shaft wear due to bag rubbing, and poor grips.  Almost any 20th century used club can be refurbed.

Upgrade Options

The spec sheet will indicate the upgrade options available.  Upgrade categories are:

  1. New rubber grips.  Standard upgrade uses Tacki Mac wraps or equivalent.  grips. Other grips can be provided including leather and arthritic.

  2. New shafts and grips.   Standard upgrade is lightweight steel with flex specified (refer to Shaft flex) and standard rubber grips.

  3. Stainless steel head refurbing and polishing.  Stainless heads can be finished to a near new state. Major dings are blended into the design.

  4. Carbon steel head refurb and rechroming.  Like a polished stainless head, a refinished/rechromed carbon steel head is near new when completed except for major dings which are blended into the design.

Club Conversion

Since there are essentially no differences (refer to women's club specs) between men's and women's clubs except for shaft and grip, most men's clubs can be converted to a women's specification using the above upgrade categories.
